IMB says about her work: ”I enter into an almost intimate contact with my subjects. Sometimes, it is a battle for truth, between what I see and what I feel from the person. Not always does a portrait correspond with the expectations of the one who is being portrayed, and who may want to see himself in a different way. For me, the portrait emphasizes the fundamental being of a person, with their calm and inner aura independent from the face of everyday.”

I. Marina Buening was born in North Germany. She comes from a family where contemporary art was always of major importance. Her Austrian grandfather, Josef von Hammerstein Equord, worked at the beginning of the 20th century as a classical sculptor, specializing in medallions and reliefs. Initially, she studied economics at the University of Hamburg. But, following several years as an economist, she had a career changing experience, when she decided to study part-time with a ceramicist. A short time later the economist started to look for courses and academies to study art full time. Her most important tutors were Kosta Angeli Radovani, and Jan Koblasa, professors at the academy of fine arts in Zagreb and Kiel.

Since the very beginning of her artistic career Marina Buening has been involved with portraiture.
In 1991 she had her first exhibition and since then she has worked continuously as a freelance artist, with her artwork being shown in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe. In 1998 she came to spend part of her time in Italy and eventually settled in the Sabina hills, 60 km north of Rome, where she still lives today.

She herself says about the art of portraying: “There is a very thin line between capturing the essence of the subject and my own perception that elevates a portrait to a true sculpture”

Tiziana Musi writes about her: “Marina shows empathy and sensitivities, which makes her works alive and strong in expression, and giving them a rare authenticity. Her portraits are never boring or stereotyped.”
